Babettes Feast (U)

Adapted with great sensitivity and invention from Isak Dinesen’s short story (itself inspired by The Tempest), this truly lovely tale of everyday passion, magic and miracles is a delicacy to savour. Relocating the story from a bourgeois Norwegian port to a remote, windswept Jutland hamlet so steeped in Lutheran spirituality it feels like something out of a Dreyer film, Axel traces the strange chain of events that led to the two elderly daughters of a famously pious pastor taking on, as their cook, a Parisienne who was until the advent of the Commune one of the city’s most celebrated chefs. At once poignant and funny, gently ironic and quietly compassionate, the story – beautifully performed by all concerned, but most especially by Audran, clearly relishing her role as a gastronomic wizard – casts its spell carefully yet confidently, culminating in the titular banquet: improbable, mouthwatering, and supremely regenerative.

Death At A Funeral (2007) (15)

Die Marquise Von O (PG)

During the attack on an Italian town by Russian forces, the Marquise of O., the daughter of the colonel in charge of the defence, is attacked by a group of Russian soldiers. A Russian Count comes to her rescue, and falls in love with her. While he is away, she discovers that she is pregnant, though she cannot explain how that happened. Her father repudiates her, and she has to reject the Count while trying to find out who the father of her child is.

Driving Madeleine (15)

Madeleine, 92 years old, calls a taxi to take her to the retirement home where she will be living. Charles, a disillusioned driver with a tender heart, agrees to drive by the places that affected Madeleine's life. Through the streets of Paris, her extraordinary past is revealed. They don't know it yet, but they will forge a friendship during this drive that will change their lives forever. This is a French language film with English subtitles.

Much more focused on the "small step for man" and less on the "giant leap for mankind", this follows Neil Armstrong on his journey to becoming the first man to walk on the moon. The perils and exhilarations of spaceflight are brilliantly conveyed to give you the hair-raising feeling of what it was really like inside Apollo 11.

Fly Me To The Moon (12a)

Full Time (12)

Julie lives away from her husband outside Paris with her two children. Every morning she has to travel into the city, where she works as a chambermaid in a luxury hotel. Every day is a race against time: while it is still dark, Julie takes the children to an elderly neighbor who acts as a childminder. She runs to the railway station, where she just manages to catch the train. Then the national strike begins: she has to change to a bus and it becomes impossible to get to work on time. She urgently needs her job because her ex-husband doesn't pay any maintenance. She has been trying for a long time to find a better-paid job near her home that would be commensurate with her training. When she finally gets a job interview, the problems start all over again. She can't stay away from work and has to persuade a colleague to cover for her.

Going in Style (12a)

A reboot of the 1979 movie that was directed by Martin Brest and featured George Burns, Art Carney, and Lee Strasberg. Three seniors, who are living social security check to check and even reduced to eating dog food at times, decide they have had enough. So, they plan to rob a bank...problem is, they don't even know how to handle a gun! A social commentary on growing old in America and what we are sometimes driven to, due to circumstances.

Golden Years - Grand Theft OAP (12a)

Fate, the pensions crisis and a steadfast refusal to accept the injustice of old age have contrived to force law abiding, retired couple, Arthur and Martha Goode into a life of crime. Refusing to take the loss of their pensions lying down and to fade away into their declining years, our characters decide to fight back. They decide to take back what was theirs in the first place. They decide to start robbing banks.

Goodbye Christopher Robin (PG)

After leaving London for the English countryside, writer A.A. Milne starts to spin fanciful yarns about his son's growing collection of stuffed animals. These stories form the basis for "Winnie-the-Pooh" and "The House at Pooh Corner," published respectively in 1926 and 1928. Based on a true story about a group of British convicts who become prize- winning gardeners. Colin and Fergus are incarcerated in an experimental facility in England. They take up gardening as part of their rehabilitation under the guidance of horticulture expert Georgina Woodhouse. Eventually, their diligence pays off and they go on to compete in the prestigious Hampton Court Palace Flower Show.

Hamlet (2023) (12a)

Le Genou De Claire (PG)

Les Nuits De La Pleine Lune (15)

Wicked Little Letters (15)

A 1920s English seaside town bears witness to a dark, absurd scandal in this riotous mystery comedy. Based on a stranger-than-fiction true story, "Wicked Little Letters" follows two neighbours: deeply-conservative local Edith Swan (Olivia Colman) and rowdy Irish migrant Rose Gooding (Jessie Buckley). When Edith and fellow residents start to receive wicked letters full of unintentionally hilarious profanities, foul-mouthed Rose is charged with the crime. The anonymous letters prompt a national uproar, and a trial ensues. However, as the town's women, led by Police Officer Gladys Moss (Anjana Vasan), begin to investigate the crime themselves, they suspect that something is amiss and Rose might not be the culprit after all.

Wild Mountain Thyme (12)

John Patrick Shanley, who created the classic MOONSTRUCK, brings his sweeping romantic vision to Ireland with Wild Mountain Thyme. The headstrong farmer Rosemary Muldoon (Emily Blunt) has her heart set on winning her neighbor Anthony Reilly’s love. The problem is Anthony (Jamie Dornan) seems to have inherited a family curse, and remains oblivious to his beautiful admirer. Stung by his father Tony's (Christopher Walken) plans to sell the family farm to his American nephew (Jon Hamm), Anthony is jolted into pursuing his dreams in this comedic, moving and wildly romantic tale.

Wilding (PG)

A British documentary following a young couple who bet on nature for the future of their failing, four-hundred-year-old estate. The pair battle entrenched tradition as they rip down fences and set the land back to its natural state, entrusting its recovery to a motley mix of animals both tame and wild. It is the beginning of a grand experiment that will become one of the most significant rewilding projects in Europe.
